Multiple myeloma (MM) is a malignant tumor of plasma cells characterized by overproduction of abnormal plasma cells in the bone marrow and manifested by skeletal destruction, bone pain, and presence of abnormous immunoglobulins. The annual incidence varies between 1: 28,000 to 1:12,200 (in African American). MM is more common in men in their early 60s. Current therapies include steroids, alkylating agents, bisphosphonates and high-dose chemotherapy with an autologous stem cell transplant. |
